potboiler?!

new to the list so, don't know if you've all discussed this ad infinitum,
but i am intrigued to hear some opinions on the place of _Vineland_ 
relative to old Tom's other books. 
my position is that it is step forward from the epistemelogical angst so 
powerfully present in the earlier novels. i'd like to argue this at 
length if any of y'all are interested.
I'd also like to hear a well-developed argument maintaining that it is not 
up to par with GR or Cl49, so that i can shoot this position down in detail :^P
