I remember reading about this - including all the details of the original 
message - in Fortean Times about five years ago. As I remember it, the bone 
gradually grows back over the hole, thus encouraging the trepanner to make 
further borings...

At the risk of turning this into an alt.tasteless stream, there was also details 
of someone using a *power* drill as an update to this ancient practice...
