Ah yes! Trepanning.... There's an account of the old South American
practice (by the Chimu or other coastal Peruvian culture) in the novel,
INCA. (Same fellow who wrote THE LUCK OF HUEMAC (about a REAL ballplayer,
Central Mexico style) & TIKAL (about the Maya of the Peten)).

And as Jimmy Dale Gilmore sings:
