anti-academic that I am (hah!) my first pointer to GR came in the form of a 
co-worker at a beach where I worked as a lifeguard, this was '73...being an 
aspiring writer (went to Iowa Writers Workshop that fall) he naturally 
worked as a locker room attendant.  He was high on TRP, positively raving. 
 I was into other stuff at the time, but filed it away as from a reliable 
source.  Almost three years later, I started in on it (luckily unemployed at 
the time but still housed and eating) and did nothing else for two weeks. 
 That old bantam edition sure had small print...
