I have to throw my hat in the ring with Mr. O'neill. One
of the things that most impresses me about Pynchon is the fact
that he is a writer who has managed to avoid becoming a Writer.
It seems to me that most of the world's Writers get trapped in
public personae (Mailer, Bellow, Rushdie, etc etc) and become
crappier thereby. I'm personalkly convinced that the quality of
somebody's writing is in inverse proportion to the amount of time
s/he spends giving speeches, writing for newspapers and so on.
Somebody could put an interesting book together on the
topic of writers who were either anonymous or who had "real" (ie
non-literary) lives as well as being writers. This would include
many of history's finest writers: Paz, Richardson, Kafka,
Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Musil...
