That would be the honorable Terry Gilliam, I believe; also directed The
Fisher King. That's a good choice. But since we're fantasizing here, I'm
going to run down my list of who should direct what Pynchon piece. And I'm
going to use *dead* directors as well as living ones.

And oh, the lament of th screenwriters! We do AT LEAST HALF THE WORK ON THE
GODDAM FILM and never get near as much credit as the director. I'm not
knocking the director's contribution, but do you think CHINATOWN would be
half as good had not Robert Towne written such an amazing screenplay? So in
tribute to that oft-unsung hero of the screen, the screenwriter, I give you
my list:

V
     Screenplay by J. Mankewietz
     Directed by Orson Welles

The Crying of Lot 49
     Screenplay by Robert Towne
     Directed by Robert Altman

Gravity's Rainbow
     Screenplay by Harlan Ellison
     Directed by Francis Ford Coppolla

Vineland
     Screenplay by Quentin Tarantino
     Directed by Quentin Tarantino

And now for something completely different...

Actors & actresses anyone?

What is most appealing about young folks, after all, is the changes,
not the still photographs of finished character but the movie,
the soul in flux. -- Thomas Pynchon
