May I suggest you broaden your view (literally) of Kubrick's work?

His film "Barry Lyndon," for example, is shot totally in available light 
(during daytime shots) or by candlelight (wax, wick, etc.) for the night 
scenes.  This is about as soft as you can get while keeping an image on 
film!

Kubrick is the right guy, IMO.
