The latest edition of the South African MAIL & GUARDIAN newspaper
carries a story (probably originally from the Bristish GUARDIAN) by
Ian Katz and Dan Glaister that Henry Holt has just paid 2 million US
greenbacks for the US rights to Rushdie's _The Ground Beneath Her
Feet_. The story notes that this kind of US publishing deal is
unheard-of for a "literary novelist", and that this kind of figure is
closer to what someone like John Grisham gets.
The story quotes "publishing industry insiders" as saying that it's
unlikely that Holt would recup such an advance, and that the move is
probably "an attempt to establish Holt as a literary heavyweight".
Wonder how much TRP is getting for the new one? And
youngpersonoyoungperson, if they're publishing TRP and Rushdie, are
they ever literary heavyweights...
