Regarding erroneous literary scholarship, I remember reading an article in
which TRP's GR editor discussed an essay he read which showed how the seven
squares that divide each chapter form the symbolic basis for the entire
novel. The editor said the theory really convincingly explained how all of
GR's many tropes and themes come together with the seven squares. Only
problem was, the design department at Viking came up with the seven-square
chapter divisions without Pynchon's knowledge. He didn't see them until the
book was published.
