_GR_'s section separations

The leader of a course I took on _GR_ told us a story about the sectionbreak 
boxes.  He'd worked in publishing for a long time, and met Pynchon's editor 
(at the time of _GR_, I guess; it wasn't Melanie Jackson, but some nicknamed 
man), who told him that TRP wanted to put five little Porky Pigs in each 
sectionbreak.  Pig love, however, was defeated by the simple task of trying 
to get the rights to do that, and once the powers-that-were (who owns 
Porky, Warner Bros?) saw what kinda book _GR_ was, they decided that maybe 
they didn't want Porky associated with that.  In lieu of little grinning big 
faces, they subbed in the empty boxes.  I can't vouch for the veracity of 
this, but it makes a good story.
