I just had seen THE ENGLISH PATIENT and came away somewhat disappointed, when
I decided to check out reviews of the book, which I had not yet read. I
now understand some of the reasons for my disappointment, as I know some of
the changes made from the book,

A central difference between movie and book is that the movie ends around
V-E Day (for all practical purposes) whereas the book ends with V-J Day
(except for a kind of postscript).

Quite a difference when you keep in mind that both author and a main
character are Asians.

Highly recommend both however. Guarantee you'll tear up.
