I just had seen THE ENGLISH PATIENT and came away somewhat disappointed, when
I decided to check out reviews of the book, which I had not yet read. I
now understand some of the reasons for my disappointment, as I know some of
the changes made from the book, but I also came across the following in
one review (from THE NEW REPUBLIC):

"It
isn't only the technique that is familiar, either. When AlmAsy reflects
gloomily that "there was just trade and power, money and war. Financial and
military despots shaped the world," V. and Gravity's Rainbow light up in the
background like Christmas trees. Ondaatje's cool pastels, for all their
fineness, pale next to Pynchon's psychedelic palette. His poet's sense of
structure leans toward beauty rather than excitement; vulgarity isn't one of
his vices, and so it isn't one of his virtues, either."

Just thought I'd pass that on.
