I concur Mr. Maas.  Vineland the Good.  For some really good crit of 
Vineland which basically supports what you say is Judith Chambers, 
_Thomas Pynchon_.  Her article on Vineland is called "Venus at the Mall". 
 She also has some really informative insights on V. and the progression 
of his writing to the present day, linking Vineland to the earlier works. 
 Came out in 1992.
