In general, it might interest the list to know that DFW has a book of essays
coming out in the winter, including his piece on Lynch, his shipboard opus
from HARPER'S, his VLS essay on Dostevsky, etc. I have missed much of the
disccussion here about IJ, but since I know DFW a little bit, I can add, in
our discussions on the subject, that it's my feeling that he has NOT much
read Pynchon at all except for GR, and even there not closely. He is,
however, a DeLillo fanatic and can spot quote large hunks of same, including
the entire opening of AMERICANA. Ergo, DFW did not court comparisons with GR.
He wrote a long book that is ambitious and has themes not dissimilar to those
of GR, but it is not that case that any book over 1,000 pp is an attempty to
outdo GR.
