Another interesting aspect of the "Brock's genius..." quote is that his
opinion of the "revolutionary" left is so similar to many criticisms of the
"reactionary" right, that they are actually fighting for stasis, or, more
correctly, a return to the insulated authoritarian trust of the Eisenhower
era. Fitting that this was exactly when America's perspective on the
government changed so dramatically. As I approach the end of _VL_ (so, what's
the deal with Maas? That was a bit of a shocker...), I'm seeing the book in a
new light, portraying idealism as a crutch of ageless adolescence
(specifically Hub Gates), and the cold methods of the world's Brock Vonds as
reality. Not that I feel either is being judged or commented upon, rather
that the two exist separately (real world vs. "better" world [for lack of a
better description]), and never the twain shall meet.

It reminds of the famous Winston Churchill quote, which says something to the
effect of: if you're not a liberal when you're young, you have no heart. If
you're not a conservative when you're older, you have no brain.

I'm sure I'll badger you with more comments after I finish (which will
hopefully be tonight, if I can ever finish my work...)
