By the way, _brazil_ actually exists in *three* versions.  There
is a European version, the original North American version and
the director's cut.  the studio had fits when Gilliam turned the
first one in, so it got fixed as the American version, then later
re-fixed into the director's cut.  Gilliam at one point took out
full-page ads in Billboard asking the studion "WHEN WILL YOU LET
ME RELEASE MY FILM?"

I agree, I think the directors cut is somewhat superior, since it
leaves the possibility of escape open but not seized upon...
