Wallace himself has uttered what should probably be
the final word on comparisons between Infinite Jest
and Gravity's Rainbow, quoted in, of all places,
Harper's Bazaar:

(this is from memory, here)

"I don't see it. They both contain a certain amount of
math, and they're both very long, but that's about it.
Gravity's Rainbow will be read 300 years from now.
Infinite Jest is about human beings schlepping through
the day."

Modesty aside, read the book. The schlepping is
majestic, heart-rending, funny, and intelligent. What
else can we ask for?
