I vote against the idea.  My experience with other lists that
have been converted to newspgroups is that you get 

a)  too many casual surfers taking up bandwidth
b)  too much annoying crossposting, advertisements, etc.
c)  the good people dropping out of discussions because of the
    noise.

I think our set-up here is democratic, consensual and open.  It
is a nice balance between an academic and moderated group and the
anarchy of the news Zone.
