"One of my favorite examples is Borges' "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" in which
an entire world (or alternate universe?) is posited from just one volume of
an encyclopedia previously only rumored to exist. A made-up story about a
(made-up) book describing a (made-up) civilization."

Borges' ficciones always have struck as being not so much stories, as
descriptions of what those stories would be like if someone actually wrote
them!

BTW, DF Wallace will be featured on the radio on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED,
possibly this very afternoon, but certainly this week! Catch Public Radio,
while you can!
