I know I've been accused of being a DF Wallace basher, and I

haven't read IJ yet--but has it occured to anyone else that

placing at the core of such a mammoth undertaking an already

perfectly exemplified conceit--Monty Python's "Killer Joke" skit--

might strike someone as, uh, slightly less than original?

What is the sound of one air guitar playing?

Paul-

DFW takes from many in IJ-however I find his writing exciting and
original-I don't know (being half way through) what the "center" of the
book is. Is the rocket the 'center' of GR knowing the range of subjects
and ideas it encompasses? I think if you attempt IJ you won't regret
it.

As I've told a friend the big difference b/w IJ and GR for me seems to be
the lack of a "cosmic doom" so laden in GR. There is despair in IJ, it's
just so much more personal.

On another note to accuse Pynchon of being the UB based on writing
samples seems to me to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
