Farina/Pynchon connection: In the other book published under Farina's
name, _Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone_, (reprints of short pieces
and poems), there's an article entitled "The Monterey Fair", which
describes a day at the Monterey (California) fair with Thomas Pynchon,
Joan Baez, and others in attendance. It was originally published in
Mademoiselle, but I'm not sure which year (1964? 65?). Farina is about
to be married to Joan's sister, and he introduces Pynchon in the second
paragraph:
"Thomas Pynchon, the best man, had come from Mexico City, after dodging a
team of Life photographers who would not tolerate his requests for
privacy. The mysteries implicit in V., his novel, were causing the
literary public to demand counterparts in his day-to-day life."
You don't learn too much more (about TP) in the next 15 pages, beyond TP's
reading of Scientific American and his taste for tacos.
