Baker is one of few contemporary novelists tiding me over until the next
dispatch from Himself. I find he somehow manages to write at the exact speed
of thought. No sooner does an observation of his remind me of something, than
he writes about THAT right after. Strangely, his career has almost perfectly
paralleled the growth of the Seinfeld show. His first couple of books are
about nothing, and his later ones are about -- take this how u will --
everything but. Did anybody catch his piece in the New Yorker about the
development of the nail clipper, whcih he casually allows near the end to
have been inspired by Stephen King's description of Baker's own work as
inconsequential nail parings.
Best,
David
