Brian McCary mentions:
"For one more tidbit on LS, check out the NYT Magazine from Sunday. One of the
yearly obit essays (people who died in 1995) is for for one of the founders
of modern Public Relations. His name escapes me at the moment, but he was
a nephew of Freud. The essay, in part, details his efforts to make green
the fashion color of the season in 1934, in order to increace sales of
Lucky Strikes to women. Appearantly, in those times, even the color of
your cigarette box was part of your attire. He sounds a bit like the
pharmacutical salesman in GR....
A picture of the green Lucky Strikes box is included with the essay."
The subject is Edward Bernays, whose influence on the latter half of this
century is extraordinary. Among other things, he cooked up Eisenhower's
"I Like Ike" campaign, the first to really exploit television for (overtly)
political advertising. There's an interview with him in one Bill Moyers'
PBS series.
