Well...from what I understand (I was in charge of remainders at a 
Barnes & Noble a few months back) they are 'made for bargain'.
You can tell by the back - no bar code. They may have been a second
wave that was not used by a place like Book of the Month Club.

Speaking of remainders, there is a place in Gainsville, Texas (sorry,
can't remember name of store or mall) in an outlet mall that had about
40 copies of remaindered GR from when it was re-released in Hardcover
a few years back. Wish I had more money on me that day. They were
only $3.99. Now I don't have a car to get back....
