Well, Pynchon seems to have a soft spot for the more elegant,
least self-conscious of pop musics.  The Beatles are I think a
little too contrived for his tastes.  The beach Boys, now, there
you have it, pop perfection without overwhelming ironies.  And as
for coltrane, monk, parker-- these men made brilliant,  beautiful
music which was graceful and complex.  They just did it, no self-
reflection necessary.  If there is a writer who has captured the
structural intricacies and freeforms of jazz (truly schizophrenic
music) it would be Pynchon.
