A few years ago I had lunch with a young woman who had just finished a
run of Wozzeck as Marie. We had a delightful in depth discussion of Wozzeck,
and I even had the temerity to hum a few bars of parts that i
particularly liked.
Then she started talking about other operas assuming I was a real opera
buff. Wrong. The only opera I really have any knowledge of just happened
to be Wozzeck. (Why that one, is a long story which I won't go into now.)
TRP could very easily have learned enough classical/operatic music in an
afternoon or two at any good library to write what he did in his novels.
Other factoids in his works take more time to gather, but could also be
gleamed from a cursory reading and good note taking.
Now the possibility of this happening is not a claim by me that it did.
Just a reminder that such things are possible. How much of GR would a
student have to actually read to appear in a casual conversation as a fan
of TRP? Not all that much, I think.
