Moxie was very much a fact of my New England childhood (i.e. 50s). It
was, as Don reports, a very strong, bitter, herbal tonic (making use of
the portmanteau 'tonic' in eastern Mass. to mean both a generic softdrink
and a medicinal dose). As late as three years ago, I could still find it
(the modified, less-bitter formulation) in Rhode Island and western
Mass., but will accept that it may now have gone the path of Fan Tan gum
and Sweet Caporal cigarettes, joining other brands of products in a
Jurassic heaven.
