I think the key is "as you can decently get". Chaucer at times was more 
'uncomfortable'. (I suppose it depends on the audience, though.) I'd 
be very surprised if incest ever occurred in Married with Children. I'd 
be surprised if so much as a little adultery ever happened. The 
writers of these kinds of shows probably have a whole list of no-nos 
stuck up on the wall. Ditto for The Simpsons.
