How has TV affected TP's writing??? A different kind of thread...

Hi folks,

Here's a different kind of TV thread to add to the list. All of the recent
postings re: the TV contect vs. the book content of the list comes at a time
when a good friend recently finished teaching a graduate course in
Postmodern Fiction. One of the titles on the syllabus was VINELAND, and we
got to discussing the PRESENCE of television in the novel -- which is more
apparent than in any other Pynchon work. In my opinion, there is almost TOO
MUCH TV in the novel. That is, while reading, the book's integration of
television techniques and the underlying TV feel of the narrative was at
times TOO SPASTIC -- though I read the novel on the tail of GR, which is
more of a cinematic novel. Interesting. Perhaps TV has affected Pynchon's
craft -- outside of the fact that GR's era is the era of film, and VINLAND's
the product of a TV generation. Hmmm... lots of threads here! :-)

Well, my question is: Is Thomas Pynchon watching too much TV for his own
good? Perhaps it's taking him so long to publish his next novel because
he's too busy channel surfing between Oprah, Baywatch and old reruns of
Leave it to Beaver on Nick at Night. Just another thought.

Peace, Love and a V2 Rocket!
