  Dan Schmidt asks:
>(the tiny paperback; anyone else have that edition?
referring of course to the 1974 Bantam edition -- which I think is the
handsomest edition of all.

I was a junior-high school student and addicted to Edgar Rice Burroughs'
John Carter of Mars series when espied I the rust-brown cover on the drug-
store paperback rack, and enthralled with its look, slapped down my $2.50.
It was the first contemporary literary novel I had ever read. Starting at
the deep end, huh?
