Here's the full cite for an immensely productive discussion of Pynchon's 
poetics vis-a-vis those of kindred ex-centric Robert Smithson.  
Smithson's "Collected Writings," edited by Jack Flam, were recently 
re-released in an updated softcover edition, and are well worth sustained 
attention.

"Gravity's Rainbow and the Spiral Jetty," by Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe and 
John Johnston.  In, October #1 (64-84), #2 (71-90), and #3 (90-102), 
Spring 1976-Spring 1977.  October is a multidisciplinary journal of 
entirely lucid art criticism, published by the MIT Press.
