Well, well, well. Prof. Gilbert-Rolfe was my abstract art teacher back in 
1975, a thin, spidery man who chainsmoked Players cigarettes as he 
discoursed on entropy and kindred subjects dear to modern art critics. 
The day he announced in class that Gravity's Rainbow was "one of the most 
significant novels of the 20th Century was," in retrospect, a one of the 
most significant days of my life, as it led me to go out and pick up a 
copy of this book I'd never heard of. His similar enthusiasm for Smithson 
did not rub off, but I would be willing to give him a second chance.
