We (Skip Wolfe) were introduced to Pynchon by Richard Porier's "Saturday
Review" review of _GR_ , so immediately read _V_ and loved it, even though
we didn't know what the hell was going on half the time. Then continued
with the other novels in order, in the meantime reading inter-library-loan
xeroxes of the short stories (pre- _Slow Learner_), and what criticism we
could find. We've read _GR_ 4 or 5 times (one year we read it entirely
while on the john -- somebody call Ripley). We've got a nearly-finished
master's thesis on _V_ that we wrote circa 1974 (never handed it in,
discouraged by the miserable prospects for teaching college English at the
time), which we still occasionally think about dragging out and trying to
groom for publication, but are probably too lazy.
Came from rural Pennsylvania -- began college -- Vietnam in '69 -- finished
college & most of grad school (see above) in Florida. Were a printer's
devil for a while, and now live in a suburb of Atlanta and work at the
Centers for Disease Control telling people about immunization. We'll be
volunteering at the Olympics starting in a few days (look for us at the
turn-around point of the marathons).
At pushing 50, we feel like the senior citizen of the group, and anticipate
with horror the prospect of being flamed by pups like hag or Andrew.
Non-Pynchon pursuits:
--Jazz (Miles!, other classic-type jazz, and outside, mainly)
--Various other music (Eno, Beck, Beastie Boys, Zappa, Shaggy, Eugene
Chadbourne, the Young brothers [LaMonte and Neil], Terry Riley, doo-wop,
blues, some rap, not much classical, no country [unless you count the
Rednex] & lots more)
--Almost any literature, but generally prefer American. Also Science
Fiction. Also give us Sherlock Holmes (even the cheezy pastiches) or
anything by Peter Straub
--Running, particularly on trails
PS -- Our daughter suggested using the royal we.
