    You might look at  Brian Stonehill's quite good book 
The Self-Conscious Novel: Artiface in Fiction from Joyce to
Pynchon. Brian, if I'm not mistaken, is on the list, and few
would be better suited to guide your investigations in this
matter. It was printed a few years back (maybe six?) by I
think UPenn press. Good Luck.
