On this thread of toilets and whatnot, it might be pertinent to mention
Nathaniel West's THE DREAM LIFE OF BALSO SNELL, which in its way (like
MISS LONELYHEARTS  and DAY OF THE LOCUST) forshadows some of earlier
Pynchon in style and theme.  This particular novel begins with the hero
entering the Trojan Horse through the rear.
