infinite footnotes

Why should the footnotes be any more than part of the text relocated and put
in smaller, more crowded type (to be very mechancial about it.)?
For those who suggest that they'd like the book better without them, the
novel surely wouldn't be the same without them. They could just be huge
parentheticals placed directly in the text.

And certainly GR wouldn't be the same with them.
