The way you had it set up it would be going to everybody on the list 
plus a copy to me, which copy I have just read. Later I should receive my 
copy as member of the list.

For messages you want to go to everyone on the list, a good general 
addressing policy might be to exclude everything but pynchon-l at sfu.ca
from  the "To" field and everything period from the "cc" field. 

An exception to this rule might be if you wanted a particular individual
to get the message super fast. It would stand to reason that the general 
posting would on average take a little longer, since it's a two step
process. Of course, nothing is 100 percent on the Internet.

I hope my thinking on this is correct and has not just added a 
confusion factor.

Liked your comments on the social contract type thing between SoCal
pedestrians and motorists. It's reassuring to know things are the same
in Westwood as in Pasadena where I spent my formative years.
