If I remember rightly the Newsweek article on DFW and IJ mentioned that 
he had the odd hobby of hanging around at AA meetings and his notes from 
those meetings are where some of his more colorful characters and 
addiction pontifications come from.  In fact, I think if you look closely 
at the page with the copyright/library of congress info/standard 
disclaimer he gives a nod to the people he met at the open AA meetings he 
attended.
