Ellipsis without dots

That's exactly what it is, bogglingly, jaw-slackeningly good style.
Most of the chuckles elicited from me by the opening of `The Broom of
the System' were a response to style not content. This is perhaps the
one respect where a comparison to Pynchon is worth something. The
style draws you in and on until suddenly you find you are on page 157
and when you went to bed you were only at page 65 and it's only 1:30
so you can get to page 250 before sleep intercedes on behalf of your
poor frazzled consciousness.
