I thought I remembered a passage that pretty much confirms this, though
I can't find it.  It came, as I recall, quite a ways after the actual 
appearance of the angel.  I think it's where Pynchon refers to the 
Lubeck raids as Britain's "Hurry up and fuck me" look to the Luftwaffe,
or words to that effect.

My impression is that the "other side" in GR is pretty consistently
shown as inimical to life.
