Requesting a Western

Just saw Jim Jarmusch (can never spell his name) _Dead Man_ which i kinda 
liked (as would this group I would think) as well as the Neil Young score 
but I would like to know if anyone knows of any long, strange novels 
about the American West (think of a whole book about Crutchfield) that 
can be recommended.   Thanks.
