Just saw Jim Jarmusch (can never spell his name) _Dead Man_ which i kinda
liked (as would this group I would think) as well as the Neil Young score
but I would like to know if anyone knows of any long, strange novels
about the American West (think of a whole book about Crutchfield) that
can be recommended. Thanks.

Well, a book(s) that comes immediately to mind is Stephen King's Dark Tower
series - especially the first book, "The Gunslinger" which reads like some sort
of weird spaghetti western mixed in with a fantasy world where Beatles music
reigns.... Also, in the film area, you might wanna check out Alejandro
Jodorowsky's bizarro epic religious western, "El Topo." If you thought
Jarmusch's "Dead Man" was out there wait til you watch this one!
