I have been on this list a long time, and have mostly just watched. It has
always seemed to me that Vineland is a sort of "sequel" to the Crying of
Lot 49 in the way that Gravity's Rainbow is a "sequel" to V. Vineland
picks up in California where the Crying of Lot 49 left off, and even
includes some of the same characters (Gravity's Rainbow and V. also share
characters). And perhaps because of their California settings, these books
seem to me to have a more laid back feel than the more ponderous global
politics of Gravity's Rainbow and V. Also, like the Crying of Lot 49,
Vineland is a smaller and "clearer" book than Pynchon's other novels. All
of this begs the question "Will Pynchon's next novel be a sequel to
Gravity's Rainbow?"

All of us believe
we were born of a virgin
(for who can imagine
his parents copulating?),
and cases are known
of pregnant Virgins.
But the question remains:
from where did Christ get
that extra chromosome?
