Absolutely.  To go further, a cl;ose comparision between the opening of GR and the 
opening of VINELAND reveals the same sort of curious continuity you see in V. 
(Quickly, from memory here): the presence of dreams; the idea of a message from 
another zone--the sky, the dream itself; the intersting image of a--squadron--of 
birds w/ that military echo, etc.  I think these tie-ins are quite significant.  I 
definitely think VINELAND takes ip where GR leaves off (remember that GR ends 
in California).
