OK, here's the deal: Tossing caution to the wind, we're going to do
the _V._ read with out a moderator. As David Kipen points out to me,
the list does very well without a ringmaster, so, why not? I'll keep
us to something resembling a schedule -- a-and I'll *even* get us
rolling with a provocative opening round post. Let's start by reading
the first 5 chapters by the 21st of June. I'll post something
about Chapter 1 that day, and then we'll take it from there. (This
amounts to just over 100 pages in a month -- if it seems like too much
or too little, we can adjust.) Post to me privately about reading
group stuff, otherwise use the list. By the way, you may be
interested to know that More Than two dozen people are going to be
riding on this crazy bus. I didn't respond to each of you personally,
but I'd like to thank you all now for your input and support. What a
     gas!

Ready? On your mark. Get set. Go!

In the backgound, we hear a chorus of sailors singing, in harmony:

...we're shovin' right off for ho-ome,
     shovin' right off for ho-ome,
shovin' right off for home again!

     Chris
