Pynchon as world author

  I have been watching Peter

Carey's books battle for my attention.  I think I will read

_Illywacker_ or _The Unusual Life Of Tristan ... Smith?_  hmm.

Suggestions?

Tried to get through both Tristan and The Tax Inspector--couldn't make 
it.  I don't know what it is about Carey but each of his books sounds so 
damn good but I found at least the above slow and put 'em down.  I guess 
we all have the page limit where we know we'll never finish the book.
