Coincidentally, the fine lady who introduced me to TRP (who now works in 
Philly away from me alas) told me a similar story.  My friend went to 
Barnard and had a friend there who said her mother went to school with 
Pynchon at Cornell.  All I remember is she said Pynchon was weird and 
strange whatever that means.  I wonder if this could be another  urban 
myth...
