Okay.  I heard this from an English prof of mine who did his undergrad 
work at Cornell.  Pynchon was in a lit survey class, and the prof started 
on Conrad.  Pynchon disappeared for two weeks, supposedly checking 
everything of Conrad's out of the library and checking into a motel.  
He returned to class and said, "yeah, that guy's pretty good."
