Charlie Parker

I have to admit I have trouble feeling much of Parker's work. I won't
even mentione the word understand because how can one "understand" music?
If you don't feel it, you don't feel it. I really prefer Coltrane,
particularly First Impressions and yes, the Live in Japan set where
everything is expanded and destroyed and brought to some higher level.
I'm thinking Peace on Earth, Leo, and an hour version of My Favourite
Things which I think is a reflection of Coltrane's immersion in Indian
raga, turning one form of music into another without changing the
essential structure of the source material. My best example would be
Flamenco Sketches which was the tune that got me into jazz in the first
place. Isn't this what TRP does so well, writing so perfectly about WWII
yet containing elements of a world we recognize in the present tense just
as Davis/Coltrane incorporate Flamenco so beautifully but in a present
tense, namely jazz?

I wish I could understand the technical aspects of music mentioned here
but am happy just to "feel" it hit home.

P.S. I was lucky enough to meet Faera and Chrissie last night with
others from the list. We all wished more of you were with us.

Good weekend everybody, a song in very horn, love in every heart (sob
sob)
