By some miracle, I happened to be looking after a friend's place back
when this was published, and since he had a _Harper's_ subscription
(I've never seen it on sale in SA) I read this piece. It reminded me
of a fine piece of "alternate history" SF by Howard Waldrop called
"Ike at the Mike", a deeply touching account of President Elvis A.
Presley's feelings as he listens to famous rock'n'roll singer Ike
Eisenhower...
